Instruction: Story Map Lesson Overview
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to narrative text structure and the elements of a story. Students are taught to follow the text’s structure by identifying the story elements and recording them on a story map.
Explicit instruction in the strategy of following text structure is important for two reasons. First, research suggests that explicit instruction provides students with both the ability and motivation to use strategies independently to comprehend text. Second, research also suggests that the ability to identify and analyze text structures in reading helps make both narrative and expository text easier to understand. Students can also use their knowledge of text structures to organize their own writing.
