Commentary

After reading the story, The Little Red Hen, which has a very clear story structure, the teacher demonstrates how to complete a story map on the board. She helps the students identify the story’s structure by asking questions that focus their attention on specific elements of a narrative. Watch as she points to the spaces on the blank story map where students should write their answer.

Student
The Little Red Hen.

Teacher
The Little Red Hen, and notice where I'm going to put this. I'm going to come up here and put that in the middle, The Little Red Hen. OK, now what is the setting of this story? Where does this story take place?

Student
In the farm.

Teacher
At a farm. Very good. I'm going to write "a farm," and you know what? I can also draw a farm if I want to in that space. Now who are the characters in this folk tale? OK wait a second. I'm looking for hands. Hmmmm, Kyda?

Student
The little red hen.

Teacher
The little red hen, o.k. and then who else? Lets wait a second. I'm going to call a person with their hand up? Very good. Eta?

Student
A cat?

Teacher
A cat. I'm calling hands. Precious?

Student
A dog.

Teacher
A dog. And who else? Leslie?

Student

Teacher

Student
Duck.

Teacher
Very good. A duck.

Student
You could draw little things of him in that little space.

Teacher
Thank you. You're right. If I can't spell it and I'm stuck I could always draw a picture, and that's good. OK now what was the problem in this story? What problem did the little red hen have? Leeseth?

Student
No one wants to help her.

Teacher
No one wants to help her do what?

Student
Do work.

Teacher
Do work. OK I'm going to write that in the problem box here. No one will help the little red hen do work. Thanks for all of those prompts. That helped me a lot.
